Kelly Halsted
Project Manager – City of Buckeye
Where are you originally from?
I grew up on the western coast of Iowa – Council Bluffs.
How did you come to work in the economic development profession?
I started my career by working for a congresswoman. First on her campaign, then on her staff in Washington D.C. After I left D.C. I worked in the private sector for a while in marketing and international sales. I worked for the state of Iowa in foreign trade and direct investment for 13 years.
How long have been in your current role?
I have been in my current role since November. I moved to Arizona for the opportunity with Buckeye.
What drew you to the opportunity with Buckeye?
The amount of growth and opportunity. The amount of potential is exciting.
How long have you been an AAED member?
I joined AAED right away. Before I moved, I was a part of a similar organization in Iowa – Professional Developers of Iowa. I was the past president and very involved in the legislative committee.
I am looking forward to learning about the intricacies of economic development in Arizona. Having close to 30 years of experience, I am excited to see what I can offer with regards to experience and mentorship.
What committees are you involved in?
I am involved in the Workforce Committee, and I helped with the career fair in February.
Any past projects you’re particularly proud of?
I was able to attract an animal house company from New Zealand. They started with 30 jobs and now they are over 150.
Do you have any fur babies?
I have a 3-pound yorkie and 13 pound cat. The yorkie wins all the arguments.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Because of my work in foreign direct investment and trade, I have had the opportunity to travel a lot. I have been to 52 countries and am getting ready to travel to South Africa with my nephew.
Any countries you are looking forward to returning to?
It has been a long time since I went to Dubai. The last time I was there was before some of the major construction projects had taken place. I’d like to go back to see The Palm and The World developments. For the most part, though, once I have been somewhere once, I am ready to keep exploring new places.
