Economic Development Director, City of Somerton

Can you share with us how you got into Economic Development?

Economic Development blends planning, business development, real estate, and a level of marketing, all areas I’ve always loved and thrived in. I originally pursued a Master’s in Education (M.Ed.) to teach Psychology at the university level, but fate led me to this incredible role where I apply my experience. Though new to the field, I quickly realized my passion for it. Every day, I’m excited to learn more, especially about community planning and strategies that have shaped successful cities. This knowledge is helping me develop meaningful strategies for my own community.

What inspired you to join AAED?
While exploring Economic Development, I kept hearing about AAED in Arizona city podcasts. Later, when searching for courses, I recognized the name and knew I had to join. I waited for the next fiscal year to enroll, and I’m so glad I did!

What are you looking forward to regarding AAED?
AAED has been an incredible resource. Initially, I was excited for their Basic Economic Development course, but I’ve gained much more. Through their mentorship program, I was paired with an industry leader—someone I consider one of Arizona’s top practitioners. His ability to simplify complex concepts has been invaluable. Beyond education, I love the connections I’ve made with other professionals. AAED continuously evolves to meet its members’ needs, and I’m grateful to be part of such a forward-thinking organization.

What is your favorite family holiday tradition?
My favorite holiday tradition is the week between Christmas and New Year’s. My family is in town, my kids have no practices, and there’s no pressure to keep the house spotless. I especially enjoy time with my 11 nephews (all tweens and teens). We take our Can-Am to the dunes in Yuma or to our family’s house in Mexico, where cook, play UNO, sit around bonfires, listen to music, and laugh at my kids and nephew’s banter. Laughing with them really recharges me.
