The ASU Office of Economic Development (OED) within the ASU Knowledge Enterprise (KE) is seeking an innovative and enterprising Associate Director to join their team. In this position, you will support the OED team’s effort to support external partners and to collaborate across the ASU Public Enterprise as well as ASU Business and Finance.

The ASU Economic Development team helps companies and community partners leverage the nation’s most innovative university to create jobs, nurture new businesses, support existing companies and assist civic leaders in making informed decisions about economic growth in their communities.  We are seeking an individual who is highly motivated, organized and experienced who thrives in a dynamic environment who may be in the heart of campus one day and presenting in a boardroom the next.  Economic Development at ASU means collaborating with internal and external teams to foster connections that will lead to innovative solutions and partnerships to benefit both the University and the communities we serve.

The Associate Director will work across the ASU Enterprise to cultivate and secure private tenants to be co-located with ASU as well as representing ASU supporting local municipal partners and advancing regional economic development initiatives. The Associate Director will perform work with broad engagement across the university and a variety of internal and external stakeholders.  This position will be tasked with coordinating certain administrative and operational activities of the department and may supervise one or more economic development staff members. Reports to the Executive Director for Economic Development + Innovation Zones.

Innovation Zones at ASU provide an opportunity for external entities to work in close proximity with ASU staff, students and faculty, as well as with other high-profile industry leaders. ASU’s seven Innovation Zones offer tenants a wide range of customizable options appropriate to size, industry and need.

Essential Job Functions

  • Engaging with Greater Phoenix Economic Council, Arizona Commerce Authority, Maricopa Association of Governments, and the economic development leads in the cities in attraction, retention, and growth of companies in the Greater Phoenix area.

  • Directs and participates in business attraction efforts to bring new businesses and University partnerships to ASU’s Innovation Zone Assets.

  • Participates in business retention efforts for Innovation Zone Tenants in support of the Director for Corporate Relations.

  • Identifies issues which may impact the department, advises the Executive Director on how best to resolve problems and issues affecting the department, and recommends measures to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the department.

  • Develops and implements the strategic marketing and outreach efforts on behalf of the department.

  • Maintains and updates OED marketing materials including virtual and print collateral. Develops collateral as needed.

  • Oversees the University’s co-working assets at SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center.

  • Develops an understanding of the University’s industries, assets, and programs to leverage and promote them to diverse audiences.

  • Assist in the development of goals, objectives, and activities to strategically align with goals of the University.

  • Assists in the development of department policies and procedures.

  • Oversees the tracking of leads/projects and reporting on the various stages of projects to stakeholders.

  • Interprets and applies pertinent rules, regulations, policies, and procedures set forth by the University or other governing agencies.

  • Directly supervises staff while providing professional development support and performance evaluation.

  • Represents ASU and Economic Development department while serving on various department and university committees.

  • Acts as liaison with faculty, advisors, administrators, and staff from both the University and external agencies.

  • Travels to other locales for engagement and cultivation of tenants (~20%)

  • Manages the design, development, and coordination of projects in partnership with ASU Real Estate and/or other internal and external stakeholders.

  • Prepares complex reports, documents, and correspondence for c-suite and executive-level management.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND seven (7) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Eleven (11) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in leading regional economic initiatives.
  • Experience working with public-private partnerships as well as with cities and municipalities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience using a variety of marketing platforms (social media, print, digital) for marketing and communications purposes.
  • Experience managing multiple complex projects simultaneously, establishing priorities.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience in working in a team environment and independently.
