Sean Edmonds
Economic Development Manager, Arizona State University
Where are you originally from?
Born and raised in Arizona! I’ve lived in Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, and now living in North Phoenix.
How did you come to work in the economic development profession?
My path into economic development was driven by an interest in connecting people, ideas, and opportunities to create real-world impact. With a background spanning nonprofit work, real estate, and business development, I’ve been drawn to roles that sit at the intersection of business, innovation, and community growth. These experiences have shaped my perspective on how thoughtful development and strategic partnerships can strengthen communities. Through my role at Arizona State University, I’ve been able to help bridge academic research and industry needs, aligning closely with economic development efforts focused on business attraction, retention, and expansion.
What drew you to the opportunity at ASU and how long have you been in your current role?
ASU’s commitment to innovation and its role as a driver of economic growth in Arizona is what initially drew me in. The university’s ability to connect research, talent, and industry partners creates a unique platform for impact. I’ve been in my current role for almost 4 years, working within the Office of Economic Development to support business attraction and corporate engagement across ASU’s Innovation Zones. Being from Arizona (and going to ASU) definitely was a factor too.
What are your thoughts and experiences with AAED?
AAED has been a valuable resource for both professional development and networking. It brings together a diverse group of practitioners across the state who are all working toward a common goal of strengthening Arizona’s economy. I’ve appreciated the opportunity to learn from others, share insights, and stay connected to broader trends in economic development.
What committees are you involved in?
I’m currently a part of the Professional Education Committee Meeting and am always open to explore opportunities to become more involved in other AAED committees and contribute where I can add value.
Are there any economic development projects that you’re particularly proud of?
One of the areas I’m most proud of is supporting companies through ASU’s Arizona International Soft Landing Experience (AISLE) and helping them successfully establish and grow within the region. It’s rewarding to see companies not only land in Arizona but also engage with ASU’s research ecosystem, hire local talent, and expand their presence. Additionally, contributing to the growth and activation of ASU’s Innovation Zones has been a meaningful part of my work.
What comes to mind when you think about Arizona?
Opportunity, growth, and collaboration. Arizona continues to position itself as a hub for innovation across industries, and the level of partnership between public, private, and academic institutions is something that really stands out.
What is it that you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy staying active, spending time with friends and family, and exploring everything the Phoenix area has to offer (restaurants, concerts, hikes, little bit of everything). Oh, and I guess also raising our one-year-old daughter (she’s perfect and the absolute best).
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I’m sure it shows, but I am very biased about Arizona, and love to see its growth! I’m excited about the continued momentum in Arizona and the role all of our organizations play in shaping the state’s future. It’s a great time to be involved in economic development here, and I look forward to continuing to contribute to that growth.
